Book Group: Prodigal Summer
This summer, IWI partnered with The Sacred Circle and the Darjeeling Cafe to offer a 4 week book group to discuss the characters, themes and issues in Barbara Kingsolver’s novel about a southwest Virginia’s community dealing with interpersonal and family ecosystems as well as nature ecosystems. On any given evening, between 6 and 9 of us met to enjoy the cool summer evening in downtown Staunton and discuss the rich text.
Day Workshop: Working Deeply with Nature to Explore Yourself
Staunton Saturday, August 1, 10am-4 pm
Workshop included:
•Sensory enhancement skills to experience nature in a much deeper way, sharpening perceptions by learning from the masters: Owl, deer, raccoon, bear, and salmon
• Orientation to using dream self-interpretation and Dreamwalks as a method of inward exploration
• Skills to move silently in nature to become “invisible” to animals by using fox-walking and cougar- walking techniques.
The workshop blended naturalist observation, depth psychology and ecopsychology concepts to give a parallel process by which to deepen knowledge of nature and self. Participants learned concrete processes for directly seeing and experiencing more in wild nature while also developing methods for discovering the inner parallel world of the unconscious, wild self. Held indoors and outdoors with experiential nature and psychological activities, demos, group practice, group sharing, drumming and percussion- lots of fun and laughter!
FROM PARTICIPANTS:
“Got more than I bargained for!”
“I love exploring new ways of being in nature, to open up potentials and parts of self”
“More than anything, I wish this workshop was more than an afternoon.”
“Enjoyed application of concepts to everyday life.”
